For Volunteers

Field Volunteers in Developing Countries
ICEHA is a non profit organization of
healthcare professionals who volunteer to transfer their expertise on HIV care and infectious diseases
to clinics in developing countries. ICEHA’s volunteers rapidly build the
clinical skills of local healthcare providers, thereby
sustainably improving care delivery systems for
years to come. Even when ICEHA’s volunteer
teams leave, the changes made to the healthcare
system remain in effect, and local healthcare providers are
capable of providing quality medical care (both
treatment and prevention).
Opportunities for Medical Volunteers:
ICEHA is recruiting experienced healthcare professionals willing to spend 6-12 weeks providing
HIV bed-side training to local healthcare providers in developing countries.
Selection of volunteer teams:
Members of ICEHA’s volunteer teams are selected based upon the following criteria:
- depth and length of HIV/ID clinical expertise
- clinical care expertise in developing countries
- motivation
- state license and registration
- references
- physical and emotional health
Tasks of the physicians in the volunteer teams:
- Bedside training for physicians on HIV/AIDS care
- Afternoon seminars on topics related to HIV/AIDS care (according to the country-specific
HIV curriculum; topics will be chosen based upon knowledge gaps as they surface during
day-to-day patient management and bedside teaching sessions)
- Clinical assistance to local physicians during rounds and patient consultants
Tasks of the nurses and physician assistants in the volunteer teams:
- Overall technical assistance with the provision of comprehensive care for HIV-infected patients
- Acting as a clinical mentor to local nurses and physician assistants
- Providing HIV training for nurses with a special emphasis on HIV prevention,
counseling, treatment monitoring and adherence
- Assisting with the set-up of any operational procedures as needed
Tasks of the pharmacists in the volunteer teams:
- Provision of operational expertise to the clinics emphasizing stock management and dispensing procedures
Opportunities for Non-Medical Volunteers:
Non-medical professionals (e.g. social workers, health educators)
who have significant experience with people living with HIV/AIDS are also needed.
Tasks of non-medical professionals in the volunteer teams include:
- Training local professionals on a variety of topics related to
HIV/AIDS, including counseling, adherence, case management, improving access to services, and service integration
All volunteers are required to participate
in a two day preparatory training course in the
United States in order to be qualified to contribute
to ICEHA’s overseas endeavors. This course
prepares volunteers to apply resource-rich expertise
to resource-poor settings and enables the volunteers
to be effective from the very beginning once in
the field. For information on the next workshop, click here.
